2021 CBHA Hall Of Fame Inductee John Liosis

2021-08-14

Congratulations to the Canadian Ball Hockey Associations newest member of the Hall of Fame John Liosis in the Builder category!

For over 30 years John Liosis has been a member of the CBHA and in the last two decades his contributions to the sport, leading with integrity and in the spirit of the game, has earned his induction to the CBHA Hall of Fame as a Builder of the Sport.

John first served as Vice President of the Wild Rose Ball Hockey Association in 2005 and a year later became President, leading the Alberta ball hockey community for the next thirteen years. With the support of the Board of Directors he implemented qualifiers for Alberta teams to attend CBHA tournaments, supported the formation of the Alberta Referee Certification Clinic, expanded membership and programming for both women and men, and hosted three CBHA Regional Tournaments and two National Tournaments.

With his guidance, the WRBHA Board of Directors expanded the sport in large city centres and smaller communities. New leagues equalled more competition and record breaking attendance at Provincial Championships. John was the founder of the Grande Prairie Ball Hockey Association in 2003 serving as its President for six years and in 2012 co-founded two more leagues in St. Albert and Fort Saskatchewan.

Liosis focused on improving the quality of the game, offering rewarding experiences for members, and as a result there were many memorable seasons. In 2009, Alberta hosted the CBHA Team Canada Tryouts. In 2011, he led the development of the Alberta Rockies Women’s National Team holding tryouts and coaching the team for three years. Two years later he organized Canada’s representation at the 2013 ISBHF World Cup. And, in 2015, he coorganized a western team, now known as Alberta Havoc, to compete at the inaugural Masters Nationals. He has continued to support the team as the General Manager earning gold, silver and two bronze medals.

John grew up playing ball hockey gaining respect both on and off the floor. His ball hockey career playing in goal and living the sport as a volunteer, inspired the saying, “Ball Hockey. Play It. Live it.” In 2011, it became the official slogan of the WRBHA and was adopted around the world by ball hockey enthusiasts.

In recognition of his contributions as a leader in sport, Liosis was the recipient of the Canadian Ball Hockey Association Presidents Award in 2012 and 2017 and he shared these achievements with the WRBHA Board of Directors.

Internationally, in 2016 Alberta co-hosted the ISBHF World Master’s Ball Hockey Championships in Banff and the same year John became a member of the International Street and Ball Hockey Federation’s Disciplinary Committee. As a proponent of developing teams he also supported the Greek National Team in its early years.

During his goalie career Liosis participated in provincial, national and international championships. Highlights included earning the All Star Goalie award at the 2010 ISBHF Master World Championships in the Czech Republic and capping off his career with Team Canada as the Gold Medal Champions in the 2014 ISBHF Masters World Championships.

Congratulations John Liosis!
