Canadian Ball Hockey Association announces staff for U16 World Cup...

On behalf of the Canadian Ball Hockey Association and the Junior Team Canada Program, It is with great excitement to announce the U16 West and East Junior Team Canada staffs. I look forward to traveling with these greatly experienced individuals as we lead our 44 players through training camp in Plzen and then onward to the 2019 U16 World Cup in Ceska Trebova and Litomysl, Czech Republic this June. I strongly feel both staff's have what it takes to lead their teams to the Sunday finals at the World Cup.

Junior Team Canada West Staff:


Paul Kastes
U16 West Head Coach

Paul has been a huge part of the Manitoba ball hockey scene for a number of years, as a player, coach and director in the Manitoba Ball Hockey Association. He has assisted coach in the Junior Team Canada program since 2014 with the U16 team in Bratislava, Slovakia and the 2016 U20 team in Sheffield, England. He was named to the Men’s Team Canada squad as a defenceman in 2017 participating and bringing home silver from the World Championship in Pardubice, Czech Republic. Paul coached his Manitoba Grasshoppers U15 to a Junior National Championship title in 2018 over the Withrow Park Knights 5-2. Paul has assisted the development of minor ball hockey in Manitoba and is looking forward to leading his 22 member Canada West team to the Junior World Cup in June. Paul along with his staff will be reaching out to players over the coming months to prepare them with game systems, team building and physical training programs so all are ready for training camp.


Dave Weloy
U16 West Assistant Coach

Dave was born and raised in beautiful British Columbia and resides in the city of Maple Ridge. Dave, in his seventh year at junior nationals, coached the U17 TeamBC to a bronze in Fredericton this past August, his most memorable coaching experience was back in 2016 as head coach U18 Team Canada and winning his first gold championship. In 2018, Dave coached the U16 West Team Canada to a gold in Prerov, Czech Republic. This will be Dave’s fourth world championship coaching in the JTC program. His goal is to share memorable experiences with each teammate and their families on a quest towards winning a championship. Dave looks forward in his role, assisting head coach Kastes and the West staff and preparing the team mentally for whats ahead.


Jeff Scheffel
U16 West Assistant Coach


Jeff’s ball hockey drive and passion for the game has earned him a JTC coaching position. Jeff as a player, played in 4 Junior National Championships with the TeamBC program, and as he has assisted coaching in the TeamBC program for three years, 2018 he moved to head coach and coached his U15 BC team to a Junior National bronze. Jeff has had the opportunity on the world level to not only coach, but play against some of the best players in Slovakia and Czech Republic with the West Coast Express. He was an assistant coach for the U15 WCExpress winning a gold, silver and bronze in the Plzen Cup the past three years, and helped lead the U17 WCExpress to a gold at the Plzen Cup in 2018.


Hayley Chapman
U16 West Athletic Trainer


Within the last year, Hayley moved from Ontario to Alberta and lead her to her current job as a personal trainer and IN3 Nutrition Specialist at ATHX sports performance in Edmonton. I’ve been fortunate to work with past and current U16 Junior Team Canada players with personal training and Team Alberta Athletes. Hayley was the trainer for the Alberta girls ball hockey team that participated in the Junior Nationals in Fredericton last year. As well as being a full time sports performance coach Hayley also is the Athletic Therapist for the Spruce Grove Saints Bantam AAA Team. She not only has the skills and work ethic to train high level athletes but she also has the personal skills as she played both ball hockey and ice hockey growing up. Hayley strives in putting one hundred percent into the task that she is given and will be a great trainer and therapist for the Canada West players.


Braeden McKay
U16 West Equipment Manager


Braeden was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He continues to call Winnipeg home while being heavily involved in the local sport scene. Braeden has played volleyball, football and baseball at competitive levels. He also coaches high level volleyball and baseball. Braeden broke onto the Winnipeg ball hockey scene in 2018 where he played in the Winnipeg elite men’s ball hockey league. Braeden was also the head equipment manager for the Team Manitoba men’s ball hockey team at the 2018 CBHA national tournament in Winnipeg. Braeden looks forward to working with the Canada East staff and players and to a great trip with all 55 members to the Czech Republic.

Junior Team Canada East Staff:


Shaun Gannon
U16 East Head Coach


Shaun is not new to world level ball hockey as he head coached the first ever U20 Girls Canada team in the 2018 World Cup in Prerov and Zlin, Czech Republic. He as well played in the Master Mens World Championship in Bratislava, Slovakia in 2010 winning Bronze with the Xtreme Canada roster. Shaun has been an administrator, coach and mentor for many young and adult players in the New Tecumseth Ball Hockey Association and is currently the Vice President.  Shaun has been married for over 29 years and has lived in Beeton for the past 22 years. He has two boys that are 24 and 26 and was proud to add, he is a grandfather of a 5 year old granddaughter. In 2017 Shaun head coached the NT womens A team (which he has coached for seven years) to a National Championship gold. He recalls that tournament his team lost to Edmonton in the round robin and in the gold game was down 1-0 early in the game, but came back fast and strong in the second and took the national title. True beleive - work hard right down to that last whistle!


Ryan Morgan
U16 East Assistant Coach


Ryan continues to build his coaching resume in the Newfoundland & Labrador Ball Hockey Association with his latest trip to the Junior Nationals in Fredricton as head coach of the U19 NL team. Ryan in 2018 was part of the U16 Canada East coaching staff that participated in the Czech Republic. He is a great player motivator and believes in three main words that brings the best in a group -  speed, compete & team. Play with speed, compete every shift every battle and play as a team - support each other on and off the floor. As a coach, Ryan believes in personal responsibility and accountability to yourself and the team and looks forward to this world experience.


Ron Dennis
U16 East Assistant Coach


This is Ron’s first trip to Europe with the Junior Team Canada program, but is a well respected coach in the sport of ball hockey. Ron has been a member of the very talented and well directed Withrow Park Ball Hockey Association since 2005 and has been coaching various levels of Withrow teams at both Provincial and National tournament levels. Ron was head coach of the U15 Knights team that won silver at the 2018 Junior Nationals in Fredericton last year. Ron beleives in strong work ethics and team discipline in all his teams and looks forward to assist the Canada East team on it’s road to Trebova.


Justin Parsons
U16 East Physiotherapist


Justin is currently employed as a Physiotherapist for WorkSafe NB specializing in treating chronic injuries and mild traumatic brain injuries (concussions). Prior to this he worked for 7 years in a busy private practice setting with a focus on treating young athletes. Justin has also worked as a rehabilitation consultant with the Saint John Sea Dogs (QJMHL), prior to that was the Head Therapist for the Saint John Midget AAA program from 2008-2011.

Justin was the Physiotherapist for CBHA Womens Team Canada (gold medal winners) at the 2015 World Championships as well as the JTC U16 (gold medal winners) in 2016 at the worlds in Sheffield, England and in 2018 in Prerov, Czech Republic. Justin graduated with his Masters in Physiotherapy from Dalhousie University in 2008 and obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Human Kinetics from St. FX in 2005. Away from work and sports Justin enjoys spending time with his wife and 2 children and is a member of his community’s volunteer fire department.


Alex Ryan
U16 East Equipment Manager


Alex Ryan is the Head Equipment Manager for the Val-d’Or Foreurs of the QMJHL. Previously he had been the Head Equipment Manager for the St. Francis Xavier University X-Men of U Sports, in four seasons with STFX he was a member of two Atlantic Championship teams and was a U Sports National Silver Medalist in 2016 and 2018. Along with Hockey New Brunswick, Alex represented Atlantic Canada as the Equipment Manager of Team Atlantic Female U-18 at the National U-18 Women’s Championship in November 2017. Alex has also worked with Hockey Canada being a Camp Equipment Manager at the 2018 U-17 National Development Camp. This will be Alex’s second experience on the international ball hockey stage, as he was the Head Equipment Manager for Team Canada East U-16 at the World Championship in 2018.
