2018 Mens Masters Team Canada Head Coach Announcement

2018-04-23

Masters Team Canada 2018 is proud to announce that Doug McCarthy has been named Head Coach for the World Masters Ball Hockey Championship in Hamilton, Bermuda...

With his passion, preparation, dedication and knowledge of the game, he is the leader we need to get back to our goal, the gold medal.

Doug has gained all of his experience in different types of hockey. Now going into his 37th year of playing ball hockey he also was involved as a player in professional or university hockey for over 20 years as a member of the UofA Golden Bears, in minor North American and European Professional Leagues. He also played roller hockey professionally in the Roller Hockey International from 1994 to 1999.  Doug has been fortunate to have won Championships at all levels.

Concerning Ballhockey, he continues to play at a high caliber and he has done so for the past 37 years, since 1981. As a ballhockey player, Doug twice has been a world champion: in 2003 in Switzerland with Team Canada and in 2014 in Florida, with Masters Team Canada, a team where he was then captain. Doug’s leadership is evident in that he has typically been captain on many of his teams, just to mention a few: Edmonton Snipers, Carolina Thunderbirds, University of Alberta Golden Bears, MK Kings, Team Canada Masters Ball Hockey and Team Canada Inline (Roller Hockey). He also won the 1998 World Inline Championship as Team Canada’s Head Coach in Anaheim, USA.

His ball hockey career started in 1981 joining his great friend Malcolm Stinson in year 2 of the Edmonton Playboys and he was on that team till 1999. The Playboys won 3 provincial championships and have a silver and a bronze medal at the nationals on their resume. Doug is
presently playing with the Snipers and he has done so since 2000. The Snipers have 2 bronze medals
at the national level and they were 5 times in a row Alberta champs. He also won a bronze
medal with the Edmonton Nordiques at the nationals.  Doug finally won his national championship with Alberta’s Team Havoc in Vancouver in 2016 in the Canadian Master’s Championships.

His coaching experience comes from behind the bench and as a player. Being a captain on almost every team he played gave him the experience to manage the bench and to perform under pressure situations. He has a long relationship with the University of Alberta Golden Bears. He has been involved as player, hockey school director, assistant coach, consultant and still currently assists with the scouting alongside Golden Bears General Manager and Edmonton Playboy Alumni Stan Marple.

As a pro hockey player Doug has acted as Captain, Player/Asst Coach and Director of Hockey at different levels. Hockey Canada named him Head Coach of Team Canada Inline in 1998 and assistant coach with them in 2004.

Doug’s greatest joy has been the opportunity he has had coaching his two daughters, Krystal and Holly over the last 12 years from Novice through to Midget with Edmonton Girls Ice Hockey.

Masters Team Canada players will be in good hands with Doug McCarthy. To him, “Hockey is more than a game, it is a way of life, one must remember the enjoyment comes first, the competition increases the enjoyment”. So the athletes playing for him will have fun and will give everything they have when they compete. Doug is humbled to have been inducted into the Canadian Ball Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.
