Over the weekend, CBHA President Shelley Callaghan together with CBHA High Performance Director George Gortsos attended Hockey Canada meetings in Moncton, New Brunswick.

Says Callaghan, "Twelve months ago, Hockey Canada gave the Canadian Ball Hockey Association its first real seat at the Hockey Canada table. At that meeting we presented to the Hockey Canada Executive on the strength of Canadian ball hockey, and were so well received. To be invited back to this meeting in Moncton goes to show how strong this sport partnership is becoming.".

In Moncton, the group talked at length about key subjects pertinent to the development of hockey in Canada - regardless of discipline.

"The folks at Hockey Canada keep coming back to ball hockey as an integral part of hockey skills development, and that, for us, is tremendously exciting", says George Gortsos. "To think that a governing body with the pedigree of Hockey Canada is really recognizing ball hockey for the role that it could play in the devepment of hockey athletes off the ice reinforces to us that our sport is both relevant and critically important".

Amoung the subjects presented, particpants discussed the need for all hockey disciplines in Canada to keep pushing themselves to be better, to continually evolve and to keep investing in programming that ensures Canada as a nation continues to be at the top of world rankings.

Further discussion centred on the role of the parent in communicating the values of respect in sport and the role that parents play in guiding children toward attaining physial literacy.

"The focus on young children in sport is really interesting to everyone right now... sport is by nature is competitive, but we should never lose sight of the basics - especially when kids are really little and showing an interest in sport. Respect in sport starts from Day One. Similarly, talking about the critical role parents play in shaping their children's future by actively directing the child's time and talent toward sport is critical. Physically literate kids not only have great building blocks toward a healthy, active future, but we know that particiption in sport gives a young person great life-skills," says Callaghan.
