Coaches Announcement - Junior Team Canada U20 2016

On behalf of the Canadian Ball Hockey Association and our Junior Team Canada program I would like to thank all the 28 applicants who applied for coaching positions with Junior Team Canada heading to England for the ISBHF World Junior Championships next July. The JTC Coach selection committee consisting of President Shelley Callaghan, High Performance Director George Gortsos and myself conducted interviews with the top 15 based on our criteria and we are pleased to announce next year’s Junior Team Canada U20 Coaching staff:
Junior Team Canada U20:
Head Coach: Steve Power (Newfoundland/Labrador):
Steve has been involved with Ball Hockey for 25 years as a player, NL President CBHA Board member and has coached at the National Championships with U19 Juniors, Men’s, Women’s and Master teams most recently winning a Silver Medal at the 2014 Men’s Nationals and a Silver medal in 2015 in the U19 Category at the 2015 Junior Nationals. Steve also served as General Manager Junior Team Canada U20 at last years ISBHF World Junior Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia. Mr. Power also has an amazing resume of elite Coaching experience in Ice Hockey including Bantam AAA (5 years), Head Coach NL High performance program and 2 World U17 Championships. Steve holds the highest possible Coaching qualifications of NCCP Advanced, NCCP Theory 3 and Respect in Sport to name 3.Steve’s former players include Luke Adam, Buffalo Sabres and Colin Greening, Ottawa Senators. We are very fortunate to have an individual of Mr. Power’s knowledge, experience and expertise leading our Junior Team Canada U20 team.
Asst. Coach: Paul Kastes (Manitoba)
Paul has been involved with the Junior program in Manitoba for the past 5 years and has Coached at the Junior National Championships each year most recently Head Coach of the U19 Manitoba teams that won Gold at both the 2014 Junior Nationals and this year’s 2015 Junior Nationals in St. Johns. Paul also served as Coach/Mentor with the Silver medal winning U16 team at last year’s ISBHF World Junior Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia.Paul has also competed as a player at the Men’s national Championships and helped Manitoba win Silver at this year’s men Nationals in Ottawa. Mr. Kastes is a rising young star in the CBHA both as a player and as a Coach.
Asst. Coach: Guy Lunnin (Alberta)
Guy has been involved in the sport of Ball Hockey for 36 years and has played at Men’s Nationals (1994 St. Johns), Men’s Westerns and numerous Men’s Provincials. Guy has been an integral part of the Junior Ball Hockey scene in Alberta as a Coach for the past 16 years and has taken elite teams to 7 WCC Championships winning 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze, Guy has also coached at 5 Junior Nationals winning 3 Silver and 1 Bronze medal. Guy has also been to 3 ISBHF World Junior Championships where he has watched his son Cody win 2 Gold Medal’s. Mr. Lunnin’s experience both as a player and as a coach at Elite Ball Hockey competitions will make him a valuable part of the JTC U20 Team.
There is no doubt with the talent we saw at this year’s WCC’s, Junior Nationals and Men’s Nationals that this will be a strong, talented team and it will start with having excellent leadership and direction from these Outstanding Coaches. It will be exciting next year to watch our U20 Junior team as we head to England and look to build on our rich history of success at the 2016 ISBHF World Junior Championships.
