On behalf of the Canadian Ball Hockey Association and our Junior Team Canada program I would like to thank all the 28 applicants who applied for coaching positions with Junior Team Canada heading to England for the ISBHF World Junior Championships next July. The JTC Coach selection committee consisting of President Shelley Callaghan, High Performance Director George Gortsos and myself conducted interviews with the top 15 based on our criteria and we are pleased to announce next year’s Junior Team Canada U18 Coaching staff:
Junior Team Canada U18:
Head Coach: Dave Weloy (British Columbia)
Dave has been a coach for 14 years and has also served as Technical Director with the RMMBHA. Dave’s Junior Elite coaching experience includes 7 WCC’s winning 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze and 5 Junior Nationals where his teams have won 2 Gold and 1 Bronze. Dave was the Head Coach of the Junior Team Canada U16 team that won Silver at last year’s ISBHF World Junior Championships. Mr. Weloy is certified at the NCCP Development 1 level and holds certifications in Speak Out, Safety HCSP trainer and First Aid. Dave’s experience, accomplishments and his professional approach to preparation & organization will bode well for success as the leader of our Junior Team Canada U18 team.
Asst. Coach: Kevin Marchuk (Manitoba)
Kevin has been involved with the Junior program in Manitoba for the past 5 Years and has Coached at the Junior National Championships each year most recently Head Coach of the U15 Manitoba teams that won Bronze in 2014 and this years U17 team in St. Johns. Kevin has also competed as a player at seveal Men’s national Championships and helped Manitoba win Silver at this years men Nationals in Ottawa. Kevin also served as a Coach/Mentor with Junior Team Canada U20 at last years ISBHF World Junior Championships in Slovakia. Mr. Marchuk’s experience both as a player and a Coach will be invaluable on our JTC U18 team.
Asst. Coach: Ted Wilson (Ontario)
Ted has an extensive background both as a player and as a coach in Ice Hockey and is certified at the highest NCCP levels. Ted is currently the Head Coach of the LakeHead University Thunderwolves. Mr. Wilson has been active the past several seasons coaching in ball hockey with both the New Tec Extreme and the Barrie Wild most recently winning the PeeWee AA Championship with New Tecumseh. Ted’s elite coaching experience will make him a valuable addition to our Junior Team Canada U18 Coaching team.
There is no doubt with the talent we saw at this year’s WCC’s and Junior Nationals that this will be a strong, talented team and it will start with having excellent leadership and direction from these outstanding coaches. It will be exciting next year to watch our U18 Junior team as we head to England and look to build on our rich history of success at the 2016 ISBHF World Junior Championships.
