Coaches Announcement - Junior Team Canada U16 2016

General Manager, Junior Team Canada, Norm Spitzer announces coaches selection for Junior Team Canada Under 16.

On behalf of the Canadian Ball Hockey Association and our Junior Team Canada program I would like to thank all the 28 applicants who applied for coaching positions with Junior Team Canada heading to England for the ISBHF World Junior Championships next July. The JTC Coach selection committee consisting of President Shelley Callaghan, High Performance Director George Gortsos and myself  conducted interviews with the top 15 based on our criteria and we are pleased to announce next year’s  Junior Team Canada U16 Coaching staff:
 
Junior Team Canada U16:
Head Coach: Tyrel Spitzer (Alberta)
Tyrel has been a player and Coach in Ball Hockey for the past 17 years, as a Player he captained 5 teams at WCC’s winning 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze,  Tyrel also captained 3 teams at Junior Nationals where he led Team Alberta to a Silver Medal in 2006. Tyrel has since played Tier 1 men’s and has played at  the last 4 Men’s National Championships winning a Bronze in 2014. He also Played at the ISBHF Men’s World Championships in 2013  where he was the A  Pool Leading scorer in the playoffs with 6 pts in 2 games. Tyrel also represented Canada at the Plzen cup this past February in the Czech republic. As a Junior Coach Tyrel has coached at 6 WCC’s winning 3 Gold and 3 Silver, he has coached at 5 Junior Nationals winning medals at each most recently Gold In 2014 and Silver this year in St. Johns. Tyrel has coached at 3 ISBHF World Junior Championships winning Gold in both 2008 and 2012. In Ice hockey, Tyrel has played at the elite AAA levels and was an integral part of his MAAA team that won provincials, Regionals and competed in the Telus Cup in 2005 for the National MAAA Championship. His Ice hockey Coaching resume is equally impressive including 5 years as an AAA coach winning a Provincials and Western Bantam AAA Championship, Tyrel was voted AAA Coach of the Year in
Alberta by the WEHP 2013 and has had 15 former players taken in the NHL draft since 2010 including 3- 1st round picks. Tyrel has completed the highest possible NCCP Coaching certifications most recently Advanced High performance where he was taught by Hockey Canada’s Tom Renney and St. Louis Blues Head Coach Ken Hitchcock. Mr. Spitzer recently became the Head Coach of Northern Alberta’s first Hockey Academy the Northern Alberta Xtreme and members of his staff include former NHLers Rob Brown and Jason Strudwick. He has also been on the Scouting staff of the WHL’s Saskatoon Blades for the past 2 seasons. We are very excited to have Tyrel Leading our Junior Team Canada U16 team next year in England.
 
 Asst. Coach:  Jagpal Sandhu (British Columbia)
 Jagpal has been active in the game of Ball Hockey for 11 years and as a player has played and won 7 provincial titles, 4 WCC Championships and 2 Silver Medals at Junior Nationals. Jag was also a player on the 2008 JTC U18 team and the 2010 JTC U20 team both times winning the  ISBHF World Junior Championship. Jagpal has also played at Men’s Nationals and represented Canada at the Plzen cup this past February in the Czech republic. Jag has an extensive Junior Ball Hockey coaching resume as he has coached at the provincial, WCC, 4 Junior Nationals and at 2 World Juniors Championships where as a Coach/Mentor in 2012 he won Bronze and followed that up as an Asst. Coach in 2014 on the Silver Medal Winning U16 team at the ISBHF World Junior Championships in Slovakia. Mr Sandhu’s combination of Junior elite Playing and Coaching experience make him a valuable member of our Junior Team Canada U16 coaching team.
                       
 
Asst. Coach:   Andrew “Chevy” Platt (Ontario)
 Andrew has been involved in the game of Ball Hockey for almost 20 years and has helped his parents run a junior Ball Hockey program in Oshawa for most of that time. Andrew as a player has competed at 8 Men’s Nationals and 1 Men’s Master Championship and  “Chevy” has represented Canada as a player on 2 occasions Backstopping Canada to a 2007 Men’s World Championship and a Men’s World
Master’s Championship in 2014. Andrew has also coached at 2 ISBHF World Junior Championships serving as Coach/Mentor on the 2010 JTC U18 team that won Silver And as Asst. Coach on the 2012 Gold Medal winning World Champion U20 team. Junior Team Canada’s players and especially the Goalies will learn a lot from Mr. Platt and there is no doubt he will be an integral part of the team as we “Go for Gold” in England 2016!
 
There is no doubt with the talent we saw at this year’s WCC’s and  Junior Nationals  that this will be a  strong, talented team and it will start with having excellent leadership and direction from these Outstanding  Coaches. It will be exciting next year to watch our U16  Junior team as we head to England and look to build on our rich history of success at the 2016 ISBHF World Junior Championships.
